In Hawaii, a colorful gathering of nations

Posted by ewcmedia on May 09 2008 | Alumni, General

Between showers of that familiar Manoa rain, students and EWC participants gathered April 19 in the garden fronting Hale Halawai for a high-spirited cultural fair.

The students showed off their national dress (including a tres chic fashion show of Indonesian traditional attire), shared local foods and crafts, and enjoyed a bellydance troupe, a martial arts demonstration, a Thai new year’s ceremony, Indian singing, gong music from the Philippines and dances of Vietnam, Burma, Thailand and Samoa.

Face-to-face with China’s new elite

Posted by ewcmedia on May 08 2008 | From the field, General

By Teresa Wright

I recently returned from a 10-day stay in Shanghai and Beijing. I’d traveled to China many times, but I hadn’t been back to Shanghai and Beijing since 1990, my first visit to China.

My trip brought me face-to-face with China’s emerging elite as well as the consumerism and environmental headaches that have come with explosive growth. Continue Reading »

Per capita carbon emissions — or, Wait, you mean I’m a ‘bad guy’?

Posted by ewdialogue on May 07 2008 | Research

by Linda Kay Quintana
Reusable Bag ManAt a recent Research Program brown bag talk here at the Center, I was reminded that despite some ecologically minded choices, I’m no environmental super hero.

The idea that there is a per capita measurement for carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a stark reminder that every person’s actions count. Continue Reading »

An alum. An idea. An arts scene: An exhibit!

pakistani contemporary art
'Kufic Composition.' Rashid Arshed

A couple of years ago, Michael Schuster, curator of the East West Center Gallery, was at a conference in New Delhi where he briefed folks on the Gallery and its works.

He was approached by Dr. Arjumand Faisel, a physician, artist, gallery owner and — not coincidentially — an alum and President of the Islamabad Chapter of the East West Center Association. “Why not an exhibit on Parkistani contemporary paintings?”

And so, after several years of work and considerable logistics, the exhibit is ON. Continue Reading »

Psst! Ever Heard of Micronesia?

Posted by ewcmedia on Apr 25 2008 | General

By Scott Kroeker

Casually ask somebody what they know about Micronesia and most likely you’ll either get a blank stare or a vague description of some strange islands out there in the vast Pacific Ocean.

But probe and you’ll also hear stories, especially from social service providers in Hawai‘i, about the increasing number of Micronesians residing in the Islands and how too many are homeless, struggling in school, getting in trouble with the law, overcrowding and abusing public housing, suffering from poor health, and increasingly costing the state more and more of our tax dollars.

A conference organized by the Center for Pacific Islands Studies at the University of Hawai‘i which I recently attended was groundbreaking in that it sought to illuminate the diversity of the Micronesian immigrant experience — not in the usual way academic conferences do (i.e., convening a group of respected, learned, and well-meaning scholars who gravely discuss the results of their research on the issue) — but by turning the podium over to Micronesians and carefully listening to their stories. Tropical politics and chilly Norway: A new collaboration

The author, at home in more tropical surroundings.

What in the world was this Solomon island village boy doing half a world away, in a tidy Norwegian city just south of the Arctic Circle?

Besides the obvious (shivering) and the unthinkable to many (eating whale meat, which tastes like beef) I was part of a team from the East-West Center and the University of Hawai‘i who were hashing out the details of a significant island-based research proposal with colleagues from the University of Bergen. The Center and community radio — it’s a two-way street

EWC students and staff on the phones at HPR.
EWC students (Teguh Santosa, Bobby Lambrix) at the Hawaii Public Radio pledge drive.

There’s just nothing like going outside of your normal work environment and going under fire for a few hours doing something that you know almost nothing about to make you feel you suddenly dropped a whole lot of IQ points.

This was how I felt as I joined eleven other East-West Center students and staff when we volunteered for a shift of the on-air pledge drive for our local public radio, Hawaii Public Radio (HPR). Continue Reading »

New roles for Asia’s ‘global winners.’

Posted by ewcmedia on Apr 11 2008 | General

Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, an old Asia hand if ever there was one ( ambassador to the Philippines, Vietnam Paris Peace talks, etc.) is upbeat about the region these days.

In a speech to the 5th annual conference of the Center-backed Asia-Pacific Council in Washington, Negroponte notes that Asian nations today are more stable, prosperous and (with a few exceptions) more democratic than ever before. But these new “global winners,” have additional responsibility to take a leadership role in resolving inernational challenges —
from global warming to the spread of nuclear weapons, he says.

Suppose anyone is listening?
