EWCA Islamabad Chapter Leader, Dr. Arjumand Faisel with Chapter members Tayyeba Gul, Munawwar Sultana, Ashfa and Fateh

EWCA-Islamabad Chapter (EWCA-IC) members participated in “Connecting Classroom” activity sponsored by the British Council and organized at the Islamabad College for Girls (ICG) in Sector F-6/2, on 20 January 2010. Under this activity, students, both boys and girls, from 5 schools (4 public and 1 private) came together to sing, dance and present theatre, and learn collectively from each other through different activities and from invited speakers. The program was part of the 3 day inspirational fair, the main objective for which was to share various inspirational ideas and thoughts with a larger community of the students at the same time and space. The themes of the fair were TOLERANCE THROUGH EDUCATION, SELF RELIANCE, and UNDERSTANDING MINORITIES. For example,  another segment of the event was a talk by a Buddhist briefing about the philosophy and practices of the religion, followed by a presentation about Gandhara from the archeologist’s perspective.

Report from the EWCA Okinawa Chapter

Posted by ewc_admin on Dec 04 2009 | EWCA Chapters

Shurijo Castle Park at Naha, Okinawa

1. Recruiting EWCA Okinawa Chapter members who will join the 2010 EWC/EWCA 50th anniversary Int. Conference in Honolulu, HI

It’s a custom for the members of the Okinawa Chapter to join the 2010 EWC/EWCA international conference every time. The 50th anniversary is a very important event, so it has been decided to call and get much more members to participate in the conference this time.

2. Scholarship Fundraising

The EWC alumni of the Okinawa Chapter planned to set up its own scholarship fund to send Okinawan people to the EWC and have collected a certain amount of money from the alumni up to today.

We understand that the center celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2010 and the Obuchi Scholarship which was founded by the joint work of the EWC and the Okinawa prefectural government in Japan celebrates its 10th anniversary in the same year. We would like to express our gratitude to the East West Center for its good support paid to Okinawan people. We’ve considered that it might be a good idea to donate that amount of money collected primarily for creating a scholarship fund to the East West Center to show our thankfulness for its great help to improve Okinawans’ academism and professionalism.

The matching portion of $15,888 represented gifts from 195 alumni in 18 countries, 161 of whom had not donated to the EWC before, and 34 of whom increased their previous donations by at least $100.

Twenty-five or almost 50% of the EWCA chapters participated in this challenge. A free registration to the 2010 International Conference will be given to three winning chapters based on the following criteria.

Gembo will play a key role in the administration and management of the Central Monastic Body and the regional monastic centers all over Bhutan. As Secretary General of the Central Monastic Body, Gembo becomes the key decision maker in shaping the future direction and advancement of the 400 year old Monastic Institution.

His promotion includes the conferring of the Totsi Jim Dhar, which now makes him equivalent to the members of the Honorable Secretaries of the Bhutanese Cabinet Ministries. Currently, Gembo is putting together his team of managers and administrators for the Central Monastic Body.

After completing his diploma in Japanese Language and culture from Reitaku University in Japan, Gembo attended the Asia Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) at the East-West Center in Hawaii during 2004 and 2005. The vision of the APLP is to create a network of action, focused on building a peaceful, prosperous and just Asia Pacific community. On completing the program, participants understand key trends which will affect the region in the future, what types of leadership these trends require, and how they fit within these shifting contexts as individuals and community leaders.
