New Asian TV series showcases EWC Grantee

TVE Asia Pacific (TVEAP) announced the global release of its latest Asian regional television series, Saving the Planet, www.savingtheplanet.tv. The six-episode series features outstanding efforts in education for sustainable development (ESD) in South and Southeast Asia.

The stories -– drawn from Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, the Philippines and Thailand — were all selected through competitive public nominations in 2007. Each 10 minute story is a self-contained documentary, filmed on location by a local film crew with the participation of local organizations whose work was being profiled.

Participation of EWCA Islamabad Chapter in “Inspirational Fair”

EWCA Islamabad Chapter Leader, Dr. Arjumand Faisel with Chapter members Tayyeba Gul, Munawwar Sultana, Ashfa and Fateh

EWCA-Islamabad Chapter (EWCA-IC) members participated in “Connecting Classroom” activity sponsored by the British Council and organized at the Islamabad College for Girls (ICG) in Sector F-6/2, on 20 January 2010. Under this activity, students, both boys and girls, from 5 schools (4 public and 1 private) came together to sing, dance and present theatre, and learn collectively from each other through different activities and from invited speakers. The program was part of the 3 day inspirational fair, the main objective for which was to share various inspirational ideas and thoughts with a larger community of the students at the same time and space. The themes of the fair were TOLERANCE THROUGH EDUCATION, SELF RELIANCE, and UNDERSTANDING MINORITIES. For example,  another segment of the event was a talk by a Buddhist briefing about the philosophy and practices of the religion, followed by a presentation about Gandhara from the archeologist’s perspective.

Invitation to Submit “Signature” Works for 2010 EWC/EWCA Alumni Conference

East-West Center alumni are invited to submit one “signature work” –a book, a DVD, etc. — for display at the 2010 EWC/EWCA 50th Anniversary International Conference.

Only one submission will be accepted per EWC alum. The term “signature” is used to mean that this single  “signature work” is  the best example of the  professional work from its author.

Each submission should be accompanied by a one-page fact sheet on the submission, including title, medium, publisher/distributor (including the author, if applicable), and contact information for ordering or more information.

Submitted works will be prominently displayed during the conference. After the conference they will be donated to the UH’s Hamilton Library and the EWC’s library (no works will be returned).

Works must be received by June 15 to be eligible for display.

Help the Athletes of Special Olympics Hawaii

Freezin’ for a Reason!

Donate or raise money for the athletes of Special Olympics Hawaii.  Participate in the popular annual Polar Plunge event from Special Olympics Hawaii.  Jumping into a pool full of icy water means empowering intellectually disabled children and adults to be confident, enabling them to be physically strong, keeping them happy and hopeful, and giving yourself some freezing fun.

January 31, 2010: Deadline for early registration and call for papers for EWC/EWCA 50th Anniversary International Conference

The registration fees go up on February 1, 2010. The deadline for submitting abstracts for the conference program is January 31, 2010. There are nearly 200 registered participants already. Among the invited guests are Senator Daniel Inouye, Governor Linda Lingle, Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) which received the Nobel Peace Prize, and China’s Vice-Minister of Education Hao Ping.

Registration will include some meals and all program sessions including conference materials. Here’s the schedule of registration fees:

Clinton:  ‘America’s future linked to future of Asia Pacific Region’

Secretary of State lays out principles that ‘define America’s engagement and leadership in the region’

HONOLULU (Jan. 14) – In a policy speech delivered Tuesday at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton outlined U.S. goals for multilateral engagement in the region. “America’s future is linked to the future of the Asia Pacific region, and the future of this region depends on America,” Clinton said.

The speech came at start of what had been scheduled to be Clinton’s fourth trip to the Asia Pacific region as America’s top diplomat. However, she later postponed the remainder of her trip and returned to Washington due to the devastating earthquake in Haiti.

Clinton spoke at the East-West Center in observance of the 50th anniversary year since the Center was founded by Congress to promote better understanding and relations between the peoples and nations of the U.S., Asia and the Pacific.

This month-long program offers students (students from other universities can also apply) an opportunity to explore China’s past and present through a study of the historic and contemporary Silk Road through experiential learning activities, class discussions, and site visits.

One of the program directors is Dr. Marcia Frost, Associate Professor of Economics & East Asian Studies. Dr. Frost participated in the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Institute on The Silk Road through the East-West Center Asian Studies Development Program.

Secretary of State Clinton’s Asia Pacific Policy Address to be Streamed Live Online Jan. 12

HONOLULU (Jan. 10) — On Tuesday, Jan. 12, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will deliver a major policy address on the U.S. vision for Asia-Pacific multilateral engagement at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. Although attendance is by invitation only, the speech will be streamed live online at EastWestCenter.org at 2 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time.


Secretary Clinton’s address comes at the start of an eight-day Pacific trip that, in addition to Hawaii, will take her to Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and Australia.


The State Department has said that the East-West Center was chosen as the venue for Secretary Clinton’s policy address in commemoration of the 50th anniversary year of the Center’s founding by Congress to strengthen relations and understanding among the peoples and nations of Asia, the Pacific, and the United States.
