Reaction to the Michael Jackson Memorial: One Teacher’s View

Beijing Review Magazine reporter, Zan Jifang, writes 260,000 Chinese have responded to an on-line survey saying they were shocked at the death of Michael Jackson: these sites are sina.com and mjcn.com, the latter a Jackson official web site. He never performed there. Chinese fans heard Michael, when their country first opened up, as he sang the co-authored, “We Are the World.” Now, Sino-fans place Chinese-style candles and paper boats in Houhai Lake, near where tourists are relaxing, to express their sorrow.

Donation of Kitchen Items for Incoming Students

It’s that time of the year again! The new students will be arriving to the East-West Center dorms in August and the Associates Office will be collecting donations of kitchen goods to sell to new participants at a greatly reduced cost. This year’s Annual Bazaar/Kitchen Item Sale for incoming students will be held on August 11.

If you would like to donate gently used kitchen goods, please contact Mamta Panwar at (808) 944-7506 or alumni@eastwestcenter.org before dropping off the items. Donations will be accepted between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm at the Associates Office, 1601 East-West Road, Room 1060, during the week of July 27 – July 31.

EWC Day: Chennai Chapter

The Chennai Chapter of the EWCA celebrated EWC Day on May 28, 2009 at the Madras Boat Club, with a ‘Talk’ on “Indo-US Relations Today” by the Chief Guest, Mr. Fred Kaplan, Consul for Public Affairs, US Consulate General, Chennai. It was a ‘hat-trick’ event. We were fortunate to have him participate in our EWC Day celebrations for three years consecutive years! The alumni attended in good strength and distinguished invitees were equally thrilled to be there on this happy occasion. The ‘Talk’ was followed by Fellowship and dinner.

EWCA alumn takes 2nd at research poster competition

Former Changing Faces Women’s Leadership participant Shaheen Ashraf presented a research poster on “Women and Water Management in Sindh, Pakistan” and took 2nd in the research poster competition of social sciences festival at Warwick University. The Honourable Vice Chancellor of Warwick University Nigel Thrift distributed cash prizes and certificates among winners.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Shaheen and look forward to her future accomplishments!
