Walk-A-Hunt for Malaysian Orphan Children

Earlier this month, a Walk-A-Hunt for Malaysian Orphan Children took place in Kuala Lumpur organized by the University of Malaya Bachelor of Education students with help from EWCA Kuala Lumpur Chapter alumni.

Members of the Bangladesh Chapter of East-West Center Alumni Association express their deepest condolence at the sudden demise of Prof. Zia Haider and Prof. Moniruzzaman (May they rest in peace).

These two distinguished personalities contributed significantly in the field of Arts and Literature in Bangladesh. In recognition of this both of them received several awards which among others include Bangla Academy Award and Ekushey Padak (National Award). Continue Reading »

Late Registration for Bali Conference

As of today, September 16, 2008, we enter the Late Registration period for the 2008 EWCA International Conference. The registration fee is $225 for EWCA members and guests, UH Alumni, and Fulbrighters. For non-EWCA members, the fee is $275.

Orientation: Local Style

Remember when you first came to the East-West Center? For two weeks in August, it was orientation time here for our newly arrived students. On Tuesday, August 19th, a special outdoor session was arranged to introduce local-style cultural elements. Registration Rates for Bali Conference Increase September 16

November 13 is just two months away – are you planning on going to the 2008 EWCA International Conference in Bali? The last day to register for reduced rates is September 15.

Nearly 400 alumni have already registered at the reduced rate. Starting September 16, the registration rate increases by $25. Take advantage of this discount by registering online or sending us your registration via post, email, or fax. More detailed information on how to register can be found on our conference website.

World Affairs Council of Dallas/Forth Worth event featuring EWC staff

On Wednesday, September 17, 2008, East-West Center Director of Seminars, Ray Burghardt will be moderating a panel for the World Affairs Council of Dallas/Forth Worth on “Doing Business in China.” The panel will include EWC Research Fellows Kang Wu and Christopher McNally, as well as Allison Conner of the University of Hawaii Richardson School of Law. The event will be held at The Adolphus Hotel in Dallas. Registration will be from 7:30 am and the program is schedule to begin at 8:00 am.

Travel Grant Series: Bringing Social Issues into a Language Classroom

This summer, I explored the possibilities of incorporating social issues into a language classroom in Ubon Rajathanee University in Thailand. Students practiced writing argumentative essays while engaged themselves in active discussion on social & environmental issues like “Thai elephants in tourism” and “globalization & sex trade.” Through role-play activities in class, students are encouraged to broaden their perspective and think critically.

Travel Grant Series: American Sociological Association Meeting

I presented a paper entitled “(De-)Institutionalization of Social Movement in Indonesia with Walhi as an Example” at the American Sociological Association Meeting, held in Boston, August 1-4, 2008. My session was in the last day of the conference. It was a refereed round-table session, with four people presenting their work.
