Join the Tibet  (Himalayas Everest Base Camp) 12-Day Trekking Tour and support  EWC Scholarships

Dates:  September 4 to 15, 2012

Organized by Jean (Eng) Geer (CLI 78-79), jsgeer@wavecable.com

Ever since I trekked the Himalaya of Nepal to the South Face Everest Base Camp, trekking the Himalaya of Tibet to the North Face Everest Base Camp has been a top “to do in this life.” The Himalaya range is magnificent and the North Face of Mount Everest is described as spectacular. Gary McCue in his book, Trekking Tibet shared: “Nowhere in the Himalaya can the immense height of Mount Everest (29,035 ft, 8850 m) the highest point on Earth, be appreciated as it can be in Tibet. . . . The North Face is arguably its most spectacular side, a sheer wall of rock and ice rising over 2 vertical miles (3.7 km) . . . “

Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Times columnist and EWC Alumnus Nicholas Kristof writes in a recent article on the importance of taking time to connect with people rather than just visiting places while traveling. He also shares personal tips on places to explore in China and India.

“This is my theory of travel,” notes Kristof notes on his Facebook page. “The most important tourist sights in any country are its people, so get to know them.  Click here to read his article: “Where to Go to Understand the World in 2012″

Obama Family Visits East-West Center

Posted by on Jan 04 2012 | Alumni, Arts, Current Events, General, News

President Obama and his family paid a New Year’s Day visit to the East-West Center to view an exhibition on the anthropological field work that the president’s late mother, EWC Alumna Ann Dunham, conducted in Indonesia. The family also visited the Center’s well-known Japanese garden.

The president, his wife and daughters, and his sister Maya Soetoro-Ng and her family spent about half an hour in a private viewing of the East-West Center Gallery exhibition, which includes photographs and notebooks from Dunham’s years of field research, as well as artifacts from her personal collection, including examples of metal-smithing, jewelry, leatherwork, textiles, ceramics, and basketry.

At the president’s suggestion, the family also made an unscheduled visit to the Center’s Japanese garden, where the family held a memorial service for Dunham after she passed away in 1995.

EWC Community Saddened by Loss of Prof. Jon Van Dyke

Posted by on Dec 02 2011 | Alumni

The East-West Center community was saddened to learn of the sudden death on Nov. 29 of Adjunct Senior Fellow Jon Van Dyke, a University of Hawaii law professor and longtime associate of the Center. He was a leading authority on constitutional, international and maritime law, as well as indigenous and environmental issues. Recently, he participated in an EWC-organized meeting of supreme court justices from ASEAN countries.

Our thoughts and deepest condolences go to Jon’s wife Sherry, his family and his many friends, students and colleagues. The University of Hawaii’s William S. Richardson School of Law has created a tribute page, where those who wish to do so may share their condolences and memories.
